The Kävlinge – Barsebäckshamn railway was a Swedish standard-gauge railway between Kävlinge and Barsebäckshamn in Skåne . The route was built by Kjeflinge-Barsebäcks Järnvägs AB (KjBJ) and nationalized in 1927.

prehistory

Agriculture in the region developed in the late 1800s and early 1900s . The expansion of public transport routes took place slowly. Count Adolf Hamilton of Barsebäck Castle took the initiative to investigate the possibility of building a railroad in order to improve sales of his products.

The surveyor Major Axel Nilsson from Malmö was commissioned in 1897 to calculate the cost of a railway line from Barsebäckshamn to Kävlinge. This route was supposed to lead via Hög, Löddeköpinge and the Hof von Barsebäck to the port of Barsebäck. The work was completed on March 27, 1902 and revealed two different possible routes. A group of citizens, consisting of Hamilton, Gottfrid Warholm, Carl Henrik Tranchell, Anton Theodor fromell, Fredrik Wrangel, Anders Jönsson in Kävlinge, Nils Månsson in Hög and August Andersson in Löddeköpinge, opted for the more expensive alternative that to 590,000 crowns including of rail vehicles was appreciated.

The concession was granted on June 17, 1904, and the line was to be opened to public transport on July 1, 1907. At the same time, another application for a license was submitted for the Kävlinge – Löddeköpinge section in order to create a connection to a planned canal to Lödde å . This request was rejected by the king.

Kjeflinge-Barsebäcks Järnvägs AB (KjBJ)

On October 6, 1905, Kjeflinge-Barsebäcks Järnvägs AB (KjBJ) was founded. Financing preparations began, but were time consuming, and construction of the line began late in February 1906. The completed route was removed on August 1, 1907 and opened to public traffic on August 4, 1907. The construction costs were 875,000 crowns.

The line's economy was bad from the start, mainly because of the economic crisis that lasted until the summer of 1907. Another slump occurred with the Great Strike in 1909. At the end of the year the liabilities were 84,000 crowns. There were also high interest expenses. Various attempts have been made to increase income for society. On July 1, 1913, the company offered the municipality of Kävlinge to buy the entire railway company for at least 372,000 kroner, the current debt level on December 31, 1912. The municipal assembly refused, as did the council in Barsebäck. Therefore, the company was taken over by the newly founded Trafikaktiebolaget Kävlinge-Barsebäckshamn .

The old company had a debt of 670,000 kroner when it was liquidated. During the First World War , all rail traffic in Sweden had good times. Problems were caused by the company owned port of Barsebäck, which could no longer accommodate large ships. Although 100,000 crowns were invested in the renovation, the situation did not improve. The attempt to get the state to take over and expand the port was unsuccessful.

In July 1919 Statens Järnvägar (SJ) was offered to take over the route for a purchase price of 600,000 crowns. The state refused because it saw no use in it. On January 6, 1920, a new offer was made to take over the route for 450,000 crowns. Again, SJ wasn't interested.

In 1924 the railway company dredged the port of Barsebäck and the state expanded it. However, the expected increase in traffic did not materialize. Therefore, in 1926 negotiations began with Kungliga Järnvägsstyrelsen and the board of directors of Landskrona-Lund-Trelleborgs Järnväg (LKSJ) about a possible takeover.

These negotiations were unsuccessful. Therefore, Adolf Hamilton bought the railway line from the railway company for 330,000 crowns. SJ General Director Axel Granholm suggested that the company submit a petition to the Reichstag so that the state would take over the route.

In January 1927 two similar proposals were made in the two chambers of the Reichstag. These were approved and on May 1, 1927, the state took over the route.

After the takeover, the line was merged with Landskrona-Kävlinge-Sjöbo Järnväg and formed an operational unit with the former LKSJ / KSJ companies, which was popularly known as Sjöbobanan.

Cessation of operations

The passenger train traffic of the former KjBJ was stopped on June 10, 1954 and the freight traffic in 1955. The line was demolished in 1956, while it was not formally closed until January 1, 1957.

Traction vehicles

For the passenger , the KjBJ of bought arlöfs waggonfabrik two steam powered rail cars for the system Purrey . Together with the two steam locomotives bought second-hand, this was sufficient for all traffic until SJ took over the route.
