Kelly Kjorlien (born July 27, 1992 ) is an American biathlete and cross-country skier.

Origin and life

Kelly Kjorlien is from northern Minnesota and participated in biathlon and cross-country and biathlon races for her high school team and Mt. Itasca while she was still in school . After being part of the junior national team for three years, she put cross-country skiing and biathlon in the background and concentrated on her schooling. A few years later she became a trainer at the Bridger Biathlon Club in Bozeman in the US state of Montana , where she supervised young athletes for four years. Kelly Kjorlien was also heavily involved in the further development of the Bridger Biathlon Club in today's Crosscut Mountain Sports Center and was involved in the acquisition of land, the expansion of the route network and in the first few years also in the management. In 2018 Kjorlien made the decision to become an active biathlete again.

Kelly Kjorlien's grandmother is from Norway, which she believes explains her fondness for Nordic sports as well as knitting sweaters and baking sourdough bread .

Career

Their first international race disputed Kelly Kjorlien at the Biathlon Junior World Championships 2010 in Sweden Torsby . After a 62nd place in the individual competition and a 58th place in the sprint, she improved to 40th in the pursuit race, which was her best place in these competitions. In the relay race, she only hit a target in prone and handed over to the leading team more than six minutes behind. Their teammates Afton Snyder and Silke Hynes each lost another four minutes, in the end the US team finished 16th and penultimate place. She finished 27th, 26th and 34th in the individual races, and in the relay race she was - together with Grace Boutot and Corrine Malcolm - 16th again. In the same year, Kjorlien also took part in the 2011 Biathlon Junior European Championships in Ridnaun and finished 36th in the individual competition. and in the sprint 35th place. In the pursuit race she was able to improve by a few places and finished 31st when the eventual world champion and overall world cup winner Dorothea Wierer won. The Biathlon Junior World Championships in 2012 in the Finnish Kontiolahti were Kjorliens last race before their long competition break. In the individual race she finished 39th, in the relay race she was classified together with Kimberly and Amanda Del Frate on 18th and last place. She did not take part in the sprint race.

After an eight-year break from competition, she returned to the 2020 European Biathlon Championships in Minsk as an active biathlete in March 2020 . In the super sprint she missed the qualification for the main race and in the sprint she came in 102nd and thus the penultimate of the rated athletes. In the mixed relay, which she competed with Hallie Grossman , Travis Cooper and Alex Howe , she made no mistakes at the shooting range, but was lapped after the standing shooting. In the end, the US team finished 22nd and last place. Kjorlien also took part in the season finale of the IBU Cup 2019/20 , in the two sprint races she finished 59th and 50th.
