Klaus Werner Grewlich

Klaus Werner Grewlich (born September 16, 1943 in Konstanz ; † June 1, 2012 ) was a German scientist and diplomat . From 2001 to 2004 Grewlich was the German ambassador in Baku , Azerbaijan and from 2006 to July 2008 he headed the German embassy in Bishkek , Kyrgyzstan .

Life

After studying law and economics , he earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1970 . In 1971 the doctorate to Dr. iur.

From 1974 to 1976 he was Principal Administrator in the cabinet of the then Secretary General of the OECD in Paris , Émile van Lennep .

After joining the Foreign Service in 1976, only assignments in the Foreign Office followed until 1990. He was last head of a department there from 1987 to 1990. From 1979 to 1982 Grewlich was on leave to work for the European Commission in Brussels .

Further leave of absence followed from 1990 to 1999. From 1990 on, he was initially head of a division at Deutsche Bundespost / Deutsche Telekom , then from 1996 managing director of the Association of the European Paper Industry .

After a renewed assignment in the Foreign Office he was then from 2001 to 2004 Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Baku, Azerbaijan. Ambassador Detlef Lingemann was his successor there in October 2004 . He then worked as a consultant in the Department of Communication, Public Relations and Media at the Federal Foreign Office until 2005. In 2005 he was also an advisor to the UN ICT Task Force .

From July 2005 to June 2006 Grewlich was seconded from Romania to Bucharest in the rank of ambassador as foreign and European policy advisor to the President of Romania. Grewlich had previously advised the UN General Secretariat (DESA) in New York.

Scientific activities

Grewlich held teaching positions as a private lecturer at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau and later as a professor at the Faculty of Law and Political Science and the Center for European Integration Research at the University of Bonn and is a member of the Association of German Constitutional Law Teachers . He was also visiting professor at the College of Europe in Bruges and Natolin.
