Klimpfjäll ( South Sami Klimhpe ) is a place ( småort ) in the Swedish province of Västerbottens län and in the extreme south of the historic province of Lapland .

The place in the municipality of Vilhelmina is 100 kilometers as the crow flies north-west of Vilhelmina on the north-west bank of Lake Kultsjön , from which the main northern spring arm of Ångermanälven flows. Klimpfjäll is a good 20 kilometers from the Norwegian border and is surrounded on all sides by mountain ranges: the up to 1406  m above sea level. high Fjällfjället in the north, the 1470  m ö.h. high Norra Borgafjällen in the southeast and the 1590  m ö.h. high Marsfalls in the east. Beyond the Norwegian border, the Börgefjell rises to the west in the national park of the same name up to 1699  moh. on. The Wilderness Road ( Swedish: Vildmarksvägen , Länsväg 342) runs through Klimpfäll and is about 120 kilometers to Vilhelmina.

history

Klimpfjäll was founded in the late 1820s by resettler Jonatan Björklund from Bjurvattnet near Skellefteå . It quickly developed into a local center for trade with Norway. The Norwegian driver's yard (Swedish: Norgefarargården ) , built between 1832 and 1860, has been preserved in the village . Its heyday was the place in the 1970s to the 1980s, when near the pass Stekenjokk good 15 kilometers west a copper mine of Boliden AB was in operation. Many of the workers lived in Klimpfjäll until the factory closed in 1989. To remove the ore, the road from Vilhelmina via Klimpfjäll was paved and expanded.

Today Klimpfjäll is primarily a winter sports resort. Several ski lifts lead to a good 800  m above sea level. high "local mountain" Vajeklimpen on the western outskirts. There are several hotels (Klimpfjäll , Klimpfjällsgården) and other accommodation options. The place is also the regional cultural center of the South Sami .
