View of the place

In terms of population, Kloster is the smallest district of the city of Saalburg-Ebersdorf in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia .

Geography and geology

The monastery district is located on the eastern bay of the Bleiloch reservoir north of Saalburg on Landesstraße 1095 coming from Heinrichsruh to Bad Lobenstein . This flat western slope with a shallow bay was an area of the southeast Thuringian slate mountains before the construction of the Saale reservoir . In the past, these locations were also of agricultural interest because their soil type and structure make them productive. A little east of the monastery on a rock head the stone rose blooms .

Neighboring places

Neighboring towns to the monastery district are the southern core town of Saalburg, to the west beyond the reservoir is Röppisch , to the north you can reach Gräfenwarth via the bridge over the arm of the lake, and to the east, on the heights, is Kulm .

history

According to a document from 1438, the nunnery owned an oil and cutting mill. From the Cistercian monastery of Holy Cross are the remains of the early years there. Hintzenstern writes: “The first Cistercian abbey in Thuringia was founded in 1131 by Countess Helenburgis von Gleichen.” So a foundation after 1150 comes into question. He also confirms that women's convents were built in or near cities or larger settlements. It is well known that the Saalburg founders soon moved to Schleiz and therefore the monastery was no longer so important and was given up very early.
