Course of the tournament
The French team started the tournament with matches against co-hosts South Korea (5-0), Australia (0-1) and defending champions Mexico (4-0) and finished Group A first. For the game against Australia - which ended with the only tournament defeat - coach Lemerre had completely rebuilt the team compared to the opening game: at the kick-off there was not a single player on the field who had also played against South Korea in the starting lineup. In addition, Frank Lebœuf was sent off after a yellow-red card. For Nicolas Gillet, Zoumana Camara and Frédéric Née, this was the only international match of their careers. Nevertheless, France reached the semi-finals, in which a 2-1 win against Brazil ensured their place in the final.
In it, the Bleus met the second host, Japan ; an early goal, scored by Patrick Vieira, already meant the final score and at the same time the win of the Confederations Cup. This made France the first national football team to hold world and continental championship titles as well as the Confederation Cup.
