Konstantin Reichardt

Konstantin Reichardt (born April 30, 1904 in Saint Petersburg , † January 19, 1976 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was a German-American Germanist and Scandinavian medievalist . He was a professor for "German Philology" at Yale University .

Life

Reichardt, son of a businessman, studied Indo-European comparative linguistics , Nordic and Germanic language and literature , Celtic philology and philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin between 1923 and 1927 . In 1927 he received his doctorate there with his work Studies on the Skalds of the 9th and 10th Centuries under Gustav Neckel .

From 1926 to 1929 he was lecturer for Old Norse at the University of Berlin and in 1930/31 assistant to Friedrich von der Leyen at the University of Cologne . In 1930 he was entrusted with the organization of the German manuscripts at the Royal Library in Copenhagen . From 1931 to 1937 Reichardt was a scheduled associate professor for Nordic philology at the Philological-Historical Department of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Leipzig . In November 1933 he signed the German professors' confession of Adolf Hitler . In 1937 he emigrated to Sweden and in 1938 to the USA . In 1938 he was visiting professor, from 1939 to 1945 professor of German and Nordic philology at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis , from 1942 to 1947 additionally professor of Russian language and literature there. From 1947 until his death he was Professor of German Studies at Yale University in New Haven.

Reichardt received American citizenship in 1944. In addition to his academic work, he also translated from Norwegian and Swedish .
