Korogwe is a district in the Tanga region in northeastern Tanzania with the administration in the city of the same name Korogwe . The district is bordered by the Lushoto District to the north, the Mkinga and Muheza districts to the east, the Handeni district to the south and the Manyara and Kilimanjaro regions to the west .

Korogwe has an area of ​​3756 square kilometers and around 300,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). The country can be divided into three zones:

  • Usambara Mountains : A quarter of the district area is in the Western Usambara Mountains at an altitude of 900 to 1500 meters above sea level.
  • Humid lowlands: Around a third of the area is hot and humid and is 600 to 800 meters high.
  • Semi-arid zone: The country is 400 to 700 meters high and it rains less than 600 millimeters a year.

The drainage takes place over the river Pangani and its tributaries Mkomazi and Luengera , as well as in the northeast over the river Umba in the Indian Ocean . The climate depends on the location, mostly a tropical savanna climate, Aw according to the effective climate classification or a hot semi-arid climate BSh.

The largest ethnic group in the district are the Sambaa , otherwise the population is very heterogeneous. The district's population increased from 218,849 in 1988 to 260,238 in the 2002 census and further to 310,346 in 2012.

Two thirds of those over five spoke Swahili. Less than ten percent spoke English and Swahili in the countryside and over twenty percent in the city (as of 2012).

Facilities and services

  • Education: There are 138 primary schools and 27 secondary schools in the Land Council, 29 primary schools and nine secondary schools in the City Council.
  • Health: A hospital, three health centers and 48 pharmacies in the Land Council and a hospital, a health center and eight pharmacies in the City Council provide medical care for the population.

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: Agriculture is the most important branch of the economy, which feeds around 90 percent of the rural population. The majority are small farmers who mainly grow maize, cassava and rice. Of the 52,000 households in the Land Council, more than half kept pets, and in the City Council almost a third had pets. Mainly chickens, goats and cattle were kept (as of 2012).
  • Mining: Zircon, bauxite, amethyst and ruby ​​are found in the district, but only mined on a small scale.
  • Railway: The Usambara Railway, operated by Tanzania Railways and reopened in 2019, runs from the port city of Tanga through Korogwe to Moshi and Arusha .
  • Roads: The important national road from Tanga to Dar es Salaam runs through the south of the district . From this the paved national road branches off north to Moshi and Arusha. This runs through the cities of Korogwe and Mombo.

In Korogwe, a district council and a town council are elected every five years. The chairman of the district council is Charles Francis Mweta, of the city council Hillary H. Ngonyani (as of 2020).

Others

  • Mkomazi National Park : The district has a share in this 3245 square kilometer national park. It was established as a reserve in 1951 and declared a national park in 1989. In addition to giraffes, oryx, gerenuk, hartebeest, kudu, eland, impala, Grant's gazelles, elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards and cheetahs, the park is home to over 400 species of birds.
  • Church: The Anglican Church has a bishopric in Korogwe.
