The Valeira power plant ( Portuguese Barragem da Valeira ) is a run-of-river power plant that is located in the central region of Portugal in the Viseu district. It dams the Douro , which forms the border between the Portuguese districts of Viseu and Bragança . The Tua River flows into the Douro a little downstream from the dam . About 1.5 km southwest of the power plant is the small town of São João da Pesqueira .

The project to build the dam began in 1971. The construction was completed in 1975. The dam is used to generate electricity. It is owned by the Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE).

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 48 m above the foundation base . The top of the wall is at a height of 113 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 380 m and its width is 6 m. The volume of the structure is 220,000 m³.

The dam is divided into a sluice on the left side of the river, followed by a weir system with five gates and a machine house on the right. A maximum of 18,000 (or 18,370) m³ / s can be discharged via the weir system. The design flood is 17,700 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 105 m (maximum 105.5 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 7.95 km² and holds 97 million m³ of water - of which 8 (or 12, 13 or 13.04) Million m³ are used.

power plant

With an installed capacity of 216 (or 240) MW, the Valeira power plant is one of the medium-sized hydropower plants in Portugal. The average annual generation is 801 (or 610.7, 663 or 748) million kWh .

When the power plant was commissioned in 1975 (or 1976), a machine with a maximum output of 72 MW was installed first, and another machine with the same output was added in the following two years. The Kaplan turbines for the machines were supplied by Kvaerner Turbin AB, while the generators were supplied by BBC .

The power plant's turbines have a maximum output of 82.4 (or 72) MW each and the associated generators 80 MVA . The nominal speed of the turbines is 115.4 / min. The generators have a nominal voltage of 10  kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 10 kV is increased to 240 kV by means of power transformers.

The minimum height of fall is 15.5 m, the maximum 31.5 m. The maximum flow rate is 360 m³ / s per turbine.

The power plant is owned by the CPPE but operated by EDP .

lock

On the left side of the dam there is a lock that can accommodate ships with a length of 83 m, a width of 11.40 m and a draft of 3.80 m. (see also locks on the Douro )
