The Wilhelmshaven (Engie) power plant is a hard coal-fired power plant in Wilhelmshaven that went into operation in 2015. It is located in the Rustersieler Groden north of the existing power plant of the operator Uniper, directly on the dike to the Jade fairway . According to the plan, it should deliver around 5.5 billion kilowatt hours of electrical energy per year .

technology

The power plant has an output of 731 megawatts and an efficiency of around 46%. The aim is to achieve greater efficiency than older hard coal power plants. The chimney of the power plant is 177 meters high.

history

In September 2008 the foundation stone was laid for the new building by GDF Suez , which later renamed itself Engie . The power plant was originally scheduled to go online in mid-2012. The date was then postponed to the end of 2013 in a press release from the operator. The hard coal-fired power plant went into trial operation in December 2012. In March 2014, the power plant was operated at full load for the first time. Commercial operations were originally scheduled to start in 2014.

The trial operation was not ended until the end of October 2015. Before that, the power plant had been feeding electricity into the public grid for some time. The final acceptance, carried out by the city's building regulations office and the Oldenburg trade supervisory authority, did not take place until the end of October 2015.

The reason for the delay is a new type of steel alloy called T24, which was intended to increase the efficiency of coal-fired power plants. The T24 steel was supposed to make higher steam temperatures possible, however, leaks were found at the weld seams during a function test of the boiler in the new Duisburg-Walsum power plant . The Hamburg-Moorburg and Boxberg power plants, which were then under construction, were also affected . Ultimately, the entire boiler had to be completely replaced.

The construction costs were put at more than 1 billion euros in 2010; Due to the problems during construction, this budget was probably exceeded. Reports about the price increase were not commented on by the operator.

In 2019 it was announced that Engie plans to sell its 52% stake in the power plant to the US private equity firm Riverstone Holdings LLC .

operator

The power plant is operated by ENGIE Kraftwerk Wilhelmshaven GmbH & Co. KG . ENGIE Kraftwerke GmbH , Berlin (52%), BKW Energie Wilhelmshaven Beteiligungs-GmbH , Berlin (33%) and WSW Energie & Wasser AG , Wuppertal (15%) hold shares in this company . The Engie Kraftwerke GmbH has been part 2019 no longer Engie SA but has a control and profit with the Onyx Power Assets GmbH , based in Frankfurt am Main. The Onyx Power Assets belongs to US private equity firm Riverstone Holdings LLC .

The operational technical management is carried out by ENGIE Kraftwerk Wilhelmshaven Betriebs GmbH & Co. KGaA .
