history

Church and Propsteihof in Kraig in Carinthia in a representation by Valvasor 1688

A rampart and stone ax finds on the Kulm near Kraig indicate an early settlement of the area. A rampart and Stone Age finds were also found on the Seebichlkopf, and there were finds from the Bronze Age in the local area . Numerous Roman relief and inscription stones were discovered in the area of the parish.

The place was mentioned in a document in 1091 as Kriwig and 1164 as Chriwig . The place name Krivice can on the one hand be interpreted as a settlement of the Kriwa or the Krummen, on the other hand "crooked" could also refer to the area.

In the Middle Ages, silver was mined in the Kraig area.

When the local communities were constituted in 1849/1850, Kraig was initially part of the Pfannhof community together with the cadastral communities Pfannhof, Leiten and Meiselding. This expired in 1899 when it was divided into the now independent municipalities of Kraig and Meiselding . As part of the municipal structural reform in Carinthia in 1973 , the previously independent municipalities of Kraig, Schaumboden and Obermühlbach became the new municipality of Frauenstein. In the Frauenstein coat of arms, the heraldic three mountain in the shield foot reminds of the three old communities.
