history

old hospital from the 19th century

Before the hospital was built, there were already several different hospitals in Bad Reichenhall. The hospital, which was attached to today's St. Johannes Hospital Church and demolished in 1982, served more of the purpose of a nursing home and old people's home for impoverished saline workers. The old city hospital, which had emerged from the former leprosy house , was located near the Hotel Axelmannstein for a long time . Between 1878 and 1880 a then modern city hospital was built in the area of the wood storage area of the old salt works , which was modernized between 1894 and 1895. However, the hospital became too small at the beginning of the 20th century, which is why it was decided to build a spacious new building further north. After the First World War and the associated social changes that were reflected in the social spectrum of the spa guests, the aim was to realign the spa in Bad Reichenhall . In addition to the simultaneous construction of the Kurmittelhaus , one of the most renowned architects for hospital and clinic buildings, Richard Schachner, was commissioned despite the tense financial situation . The construction work was finished in April 1930.

The city transferred the hospital administration and the management of the business operations to the Mallersdorfer Sisters , who had been active in the nursing sector in Bad Reichenhall since 1867 and who continued to work there until 2000.

During the two world wars, the hospitals also served as military hospitals . Bad Reichenhall could not be designated as a hospital town towards the end of the Second World War , although there were almost twenty hospitals in the town. That is why the hospital and the other military hospitals in the city were not marked with red crosses when the 8th Air Force of the United States Army Air Forces carried out its air raid on Bad Reichenhall on April 25, 1945 . The municipal hospital, which is further away from the main targets of the attack, the main train station and the Kirchberg train station, was spared from damage, while other hospitals suffered severe damage. At least 215 people died in the city that day.

Between 1962 and 1965 the hospital was expanded by an extension based on a design by the architect Peter Poelzig . In 1992 a fundamental renovation and a further expansion followed.

Today a retirement home is housed in the Schachner Building. The Kliniken Südostbayern use the extension buildings from the 1960s and 1990s for the Bad Reichenhall district clinic . The previous hospital from the late 19th century also belongs to the district clinic and serves as an administration building. The hospital pharmacy is housed in the adjoining building, the former isolation or epidemic station.

Building description

At the time of completion, the Schachner Building was a five-story hospital that could accommodate over a hundred patients. The front of the building is oriented to the south in order to make optimal use of the sunlight, while large double doors on balcony-like extensions should ensure a good supply of fresh air. The floor for private patients in the first and second class also had loggias in front that could be used as a lounger veranda. The transverse structure is in the golden section of the building and, in addition to the staircase, also houses the elevator and a chapel with a clock tower. The hospital laundry was housed in an outbuilding that was connected to the main building via an arcade. The building was erected in the Heimatschutz style , which took up the New Objectivity style, which was reduced to the essential structural elements .

location

The former municipal hospital is located on Riedelstrasse near the Saalachauen . It was built in the immediate vicinity of the previous building from the late 19th century.
