The Szeghalom District (Hungarian Szeghalmi járás ) is a district in the north-east of the southeastern Hungarian Békés County . It borders Hajdú-Bihar County to the north and east . The district was created in the course of the Hungarian administrative reform in early 2013 as the successor to the small area of the same name (Hungarian Szeghalomi kistérség ) from 7 of the 9 municipalities. Two municipalities from the northeast ( Dévaványa and Ecsegfalva ) came to the newly created Gyomaendrőd district . This reduced the area by 9,241 inhabitants (23.5%) and 295.54 square kilometers (29.3%).
The district has an average community size of 4,143 inhabitants on an area of 102.03 square kilometers. The population density of the third largest district is below that of the county. The administrative seat is the city of Szeghalom in the center of the district.
