Kertészsziget is a Hungarian community in the county Szeghalom in Békés county . Akasztó, Barnasziget, Cserepes and Görbesziget are part of the municipality.
geography
Kertészsziget is about 17 kilometers northwest of the district town of Szeghalom and borders on Hajdú-Bihar County and the following municipalities:

history
The first inhabitants of the settlement probably came to this region around 1770. At that time there was an extensive swamp area . In the middle of the 19th century there were few homesteads in the area. Drainage ditches were dug in the 1880s. At that time, the inhabitants lived from agriculture, especially tobacco cultivation on the fertile soil, cutting reeds and as shepherds . In 1890 the MP Baron Antal Baldácsy had an Art Nouveau castle built in the Cserepes district. At the end of the Second World War , the castle housed a Soviet military hospital and, from 1950, a school, a pub and a shop. 1952 Kertészsziget became an independent municipality. In the 1970s and 1990s, the castle was gradually demolished; today there are only a few outbuildings of the former manor house.
Infrastructure
In Kertészsziget there is a kindergarten, elementary school, mayor's office, cultural center, a general practitioner service, post office, fire brigade, a parish hall of the Reformed denomination and a sports field. In the agricultural community, mainly wheat , barley , sunflowers and maize are grown.

Road No. 4245 runs through Kertészsziget. There are bus connections to Bucsa, Füzesgyarmat and Szeghalom, where the nearest train station is located.
