Button War is a 2011 French feature film.
action
The main plot of the film is the everlasting dispute between the two ruined villages of Longeverne and Velrans. It has always been the case that the children of the neighboring villages fought each other. When Lebrac, leader of the longevity clan, came up with a very insidious war ruse, the war was given a name: the war of buttons, because the prisoners' buttons were cut off.
Compared to the amusing framework story, the internal plot is to be viewed with a more strict view. The story takes place towards the end of the Second World War in 1944. At this point in time, the war has also reached southern France. And the pretty violet turns village life upside down. Because actually Violette is called Myriam and is Jewish and therefore in great danger. Now the two warring villages have no choice but to unite and turn against the real evil.
background
The film is based on the 1912 novel The War of the Buttons by Louis Pergaud . The novel was also the template for Yves Roberts ' film of the same name from 1962 .
Barratier moves the action to 1944.
reception
The film received rather negative reviews overall. TV Spielfilm was nevertheless positive: “The" War of the Buttons "is great cinema for the whole family with Laetitia Casta , Guillaume Canet , Kad Merad and Gérard Jugnot . The stars of the thrilling adventure story, however, are the great children! "The lexicon of the international film noted:" The film relocates Louis Pergaud's classic children's book to the time of the Second World War. The socio-critical undertone of the original, which humorously deals with everyday violence in the French provinces, is neutralized in favor of a nostalgic evocation of rural France and an affirmative celebration of solidarity. Thanks to good actors and a rousing staging that shows unreserved solidarity with the perspective of the little protagonists, it is nevertheless a successful children's film. "
Bert Rebhandl from the FAZ , on the other hand, has a negative view of the move to the Second World War and compared the message of the 2011 film with that of Yves Roberts ' film of the same name from 1962: "Everything that Robert thought" from below "( that children try to play “states”) is taken into ideological service by Barratier “from above”. The freedom that this “new button war” amounts to is based on a deception: the children no longer fight for themselves, they fight for a state that they shouldn't know about. It is the old, authoritarian state that is wrapped in beautiful pictures. ”As an example he cites the scene in which the traitor boy Bacaillé is beaten up by the other village boys. This is reminiscent of scenes in which France took revenge on the collaborators after the war.
