The Button War is a French feature film from 2011. The film is based on the 1912 novel of the same name by Louis Pergaud .

action

The main plot of the film is the perpetual dispute between the two divided villages of Longeverne and Velrans in the south of France. The children of the two neighboring villages have been fighting for generations. In the course of the film, the arguments escalate more and more.

William Lebrac, leader of the boys from Longeverne, is a half- orphan . He is always torn between caring for his family (mother and two little sisters) and working on the family's farm, school and the gang of boys. While his mother wants him to work in Monsieur Jeanjean's factory to earn money, his teacher wants him to go to high school. For this Lebrac would have to learn more, which he doesn't have time for between work on the farm and the gang of boys.

The plot of the children's war is compared with the war of independence in Algeria : The story takes place in 1957, when France is in the Algerian war . In a short sequence, the brother Maries - leader of the gang from Longeverne before Lebrac - gets home leave from the front. He tells Lebrac, visibly upset, that he met the former leader from Velrans at the front and saw him die. In the following scene, the priest shows the newsreel in the church with images of war from Algeria.

background

The film is based on the autobiographically inspired novel The War of the Buttons by Louis Pergaud , published in 1912 and set around 1895. The novel has already served as the basis for several feature films, including the first Yves Roberts film of the same name from 1962 .
