Kurt Kotrschal studied biology in Salzburg, graduated in 1979, received his doctorate in 1981 and qualified as a professor in 1987 . From 1981 to 1989 he was assistant professor at the University of Salzburg and from 1989 to 1990 Assistant Visiting Professor at the University of Colorado , Denver ( United States ) on an Erwin Schrödinger fellowship . There he researched and wrote scientific articles on the evolution of fish and the function of the sensory and nervous systems.

Kotrschal is married and has two children.

Researches

Kotrschal holds a professorship at the University of Vienna, Faculty of Life Sciences, Department of Behavioral Biology. He deals with hormonal and cognitive aspects of social organization as well as research into the human-animal relationship, in particular the relationship between humans and dogs. Since July 1990, Kotrschal has headed the Konrad Lorenz Research Center in Grünau im Almtal as the successor to Konrad Lorenz .

Kotrschal became known for researching and attributing character traits to animals. In 2008 Kotrschal co-founded the Wolf Science Center , which was initially located in Grünau im Almtal and has been in Ernstbrunn since 2009 .

Kotrschal is also involved in the Wildlife working group of the Science & Environment Forum, which was founded in 2018 . This provides the media and politics with reliable knowledge and information about all those wild animals that are in the crossfire of public reporting in Austria, primarily wolves, otters, bears, lynx and birds of prey. As the spokesman for this working group, Kotrschal wants to "objectify" the discussion because irrational arguments would ultimately have led to the illegal persecution of strictly protected wild animals.

Media presence and public work

Kotrschal is President of the Eurasier Club Austria (ECA).

In addition, Kotrschal works as an expert for the SWR 2 radio program 1000 Responses and was involved in the three-part television program Die Zukunft ist Wild . Kotrschal is the author of a guest commentary "With feathers, skin and hair" that appears regularly every 14 days in the Austrian daily newspaper Die Presse . He has also appeared as an expert on the television programs Planet Knowledge and Fascination Knowledge .

Kotrschal made a special contribution to researching the behavior of wolves. He also does basic research on the intelligence of birds.

On January 10, 2011, Kotrschal was named Scientist of the Year 2010 by the “Club of Education and Science Journalists in Austria” . In 2013, his book Wolf - Hund - Mensch was named Austrian Science Book of the Year .
