Kurt Poppe

Kurt Poppe (Kurt Adolf Poppe) (born May 3, 1880 in Leipzig , † June 17, 1960 in Rostock ) was a German animal pathologist and veterinarian and a professor at the University of Rostock .

Life path

The father was Adolf Poppe (1849–1899), a pewter foundry owner, the mother Rosa Poppe, nee. Unger (1852-1909). Poppe graduated from high school in Leipzig in 1898 and studied veterinary medicine, natural sciences and human medicine at the Dresden University of Veterinary Medicine, University of Gießen , in Leipzig, Würzburg and Berlin from 1898 to 1905 . The license to practice as a veterinarian took place in 1902 at the University of Giessen. From 1902 to 1904 he studied natural science and agricultural sciences at the University of Leipzig , and from 1904 to 1906 he completed specialist training in bacteriology and serology . In 1904 he received his doctorate in Leipzig. From 1905 to 1906 Poppe did military service in Würzburg. 1906–1908 he was a scientific assistant at the Hygiene Institute of the University of Leipzig, 1908–1914 scientific assistant and laboratory manager at the Reich Health Office in Berlin. From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War as head of a veterinary examination center and veterinary hygienist (most recently: staff veterinarian ). From 1918 to 1924 he worked as head of department at the Bacteriological Institute of the Berlin Chamber of Agriculture ; in 1920 he received his doctorate as Dr. med. vet. in Munich. In 1924 he was appointed professor at the University of Rostock. In 1956 he retired. From 1947 to 1960 he also held a visiting professorship at the Veterinary Faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin.

Poppe was dean from 1930–1931, rector 1932–1933, and vice dean from 1933–1935 at the University of Rostock. From 1944 to 1956 he was director of the institute and from 1945 to 1946 vice-rector. 1924–1948 he was director of the Mecklenburg State Animal Disease Office in Rostock.

1930–1960 Poppe was a member of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Advancement of Science in Berlin (later the Max Planck Society ). He belonged to the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors . In 1935 he became a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina , in 1937 he received the Commander's Cross of the Royal Greek Order of the Phoenix , and in 1943 the Robert Koch plaque.

In 1946 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Rostock, and in 1955 he was honored as an outstanding scientist of the people of the GDR.

Poppe was a member of the Thuringia Freiburg regional team .
