Kurt Schober

Kurt Schober (born September 6, 1917 in Nukuʻalofa , Tonga ; † July 12, 2003 in Herford ) was a German economist , publisher and politician ( CDU ).

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1937 at what was then the Oberrealschule in Herford (today Ravensberger Gymnasium ), Schober began studying ethnology as well as economics and social sciences in Hamburg , Berlin and Munich , which he completed with a diploma in economics and subsequent doctorate. rer. pole. finished. From 1939 to 1945 he took part in the Second World War as a soldier . He was most recently taken prisoner by the Soviets, from which he was released at the end of 1945.

After his return from captivity, Schober worked as an assistant to an auditor from 1946 to 1948. He then co-founded Maximilian Verlag, a specialist publisher for administration, business, security and military policy. He has worked as a publisher since the company was founded .

Since 1949 he has published several editions of Basic Questions in Economics . His broad education was shown in the biography of Theodor Fontane In Freedom, published in 1980 , which particularly works out the political and social issues in Fontane's life and work.

Political party

Schober joined the Junge Union in 1946 , joined the CDU in 1947 and was chairman of the CDU district association of Herford City and Country from 1952 to 1969. In 1961 he was elected to the state executive committee of the CDU Westphalia-Lippe .

MP

Schober was a councilor for the city of Herford until 1990. He was a member of the German Bundestag from 1965 to 1972. He entered parliament in both electoral terms via the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia . From 1969 to 1972 he was deputy chairman of the Bundestag committee for education and science.

Public offices

Schober served as Lord Mayor of the city of Herford , which was independent until 1969 , from 1961 to 1975 . After the regional reform he was mayor of the city until 1984 . Even during the social-liberal coalition in Bonn, he relied on a civic alliance of the CDU and FDP in the city council. In the local elections in 1984 the FDP failed because of the 5% hurdle, the CDU missed an absolute majority by 41 votes (with 65,000 inhabitants). Until the next election in 1989, Schober was the deputy of Gerhard Klippstein's successor, who was elected by a red-green majority.

In the mid-1960s he campaigned for Herford as the location of the East Westphalian university, but could not prevent the decision in favor of the city of Bielefeld .
