Kuseife ( Hebrew כְּסֵיפָה, Kseifa ; Arabic كسيفة) is a Bedouin village ( local association ) in the southern district of Israel .

Kuseife was founded in 1982 as part of a government project for the permanent settlement of Bedouins. In 1996 a local council was established.

It is one of the seven Bedouin communities in the Negev Desert. The other six are Hura , Lakiya, Ar'arat an-Naqab (Arara of the Negev), Shakib Al-Salam (Segev Shalom), Tel as-Sabi ( Tel Scheva ) and the city of Rahat .

population

Members of several Bedouin families ( clans ) are in Kuseife: Abu Ajaj, Elamor, el-Zabarka, el-Nasasra, the largest of them being Abu-Rabia. Other families are: Azbarga, El-Dada, Abu Juda and Abu G'nam. Some of the el-Nasasra and Elamor families live outside Kuseife near the Nevatim military airfield (Serah).

According to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), the population of Kuseife in 2018 was 21,079 (10,300 in December 2006). The annual growth rate of Kuseife is 3.6%. Kuseife covers an area of 13,692 dunams (approximately 13.7 square kilometers).

history

Before the creation of Israel who were Negev - Bedouin a semi-nomadic society that during the process of settling down in the region of the former Ottoman empire was located. Most research agrees that Bedouins came to the Negev since around 1800, but there is also evidence of earlier migrations.

During the UK mandate , the administration did not provide a legal framework to clarify and safeguard land ownership. To address this problem, Israel's land policy was largely aligned with the Ottoman land regulations of 1858 as the only previous legal framework. Israel “naturalized” most of the area of the Negev with the state's land regulations of 1969.

Israel has continued the sedentary policy of the Negev Bedouins initiated by the Ottoman authorities, and first that included regulation and relocation - during the 1950s Israel relocated two-thirds of the Negev Bedouins to an area under martial law was standing. The next step was to build seven townships, mainly for Bedouins, to urbanize and settle them by offering better living conditions, proper infrastructure and high public quality in sanitary facilities, health and education and self-government services .

But not all Bedouins are ready to leave their lands. In permanent planned villages like Kuseife, 60% of the Bedouins live, while the rest are spread out in various areas in the northern Negev.

Borough

Kuseife appears in military administrative documents of the 1950s. After the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel , the Sinai Peninsula was returned to Egypt and all IDF bases there relocated to Israeli territory, some of them to the Negev desert , including the Nevatim military airfield .

today

employment

Despite the fact that the rate of unemployment among the Bedouins is high, there are several employment opportunities in the region. Several industrial zones are in the area - Ramat Chovav , Hura and Dimona , but the closest industrial zone to Kuseife is in Arad . Other jobs include several chemical plants near the Dead Sea such as the Dead Sea Works , various high-tech companies, and textile stores.

Arab Bedouin fashion design

20 Arab-Bedouin women from the cities of Rahat , Kuseife, Tel Scheva , Segev Shalom, Lakiya and Rachma took part in a sewing course for fashion design at the Amal University in Beer Sheva. They learned to sew and cut and received support in personal development to develop business initiatives.

Medical services

There are branches of several health funds (medical clinics) in Kuseife: Leumit, Clalit, Maccabi, and several perinatal (baby care) centers - Tipat Halav.

education

There are several schools in the township and a community activity center.
