Leopold Bernhard Bernstamm
Leopold Bernhard Adolfowitsch Bernstamm ( Russian Леопольд Адольфович Бернштам * April 20 . Jul / 2. May 1859 greg. In Riga ; † 22. January 1939 in Paris ) was a Russian sculptor .
Life
Bernstamm came from a Jewish Baltic German family. He attended the drawing school of the Imperial Society for the Advancement of the Arts in St. Petersburg . In 1872 he joined David Jensen's workshop . 1874–1883 he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts as a guest student . He traveled to Italy and spent 1884 in Rome , where he made portraits from photographs for his subsistence , and Florence , where he studied with Augusto Rivalta .
From 1885 Bernstamm lived in Paris, where he became friends with Frédéric Labadie-Lagraves . He studied with Antonin Mercié and directed the artistic part of the Musée Grévin, founded in 1882 . After Russia , he traveled frequently to the execution of orders. He created around 300 portraits of busts of Russian and Western European cultural workers , scientists and politicians and created monuments. In 1887 he was mentioned in the Salon des artistes français and received the silver medal in 1887. In 1891 he became a Knight of the Legion of Honor and later an officer and commander . At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 he was awarded the gold medal before being exempted from competition. As honorary president of the Russian department of the Maison des arts , he took part in the exhibitions in Liège and Marseille .
