Lowell Tom Perry (born August 5, 1922 in Logan , Utah - † May 30, 2015 in Salt Lake City ) was an American entrepreneur and Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints .

Life

Lowell Tom Perry was born in Logan, Utah in 1922 as the fourth of six children and the eldest son of Leslie Thomas Perry and his wife Nora (née Sonne). He attended Logan High School and Utah State Agricultural College for a year . He then worked as a missionary in the Northern States Mission from 1942. Six weeks after his return, he began his military service in 1944 and served two years in the United States Marine Corps . Perry was stationed in Japan , where he was one of the first occupation forces . After retiring from the military in July 1946, he returned to Utah State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in financial management in 1949 . He then worked in retail. During his professional career, he worked for various companies in the states of Idaho , California , New York and Massachusetts . At the same time, Perry continued to be active in the church.

In 1972 he was called to serve as Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles . He remained so until his call to be an Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and induction into the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in April 1974. In 1993 he received an honorary doctorate from Brigham Young University . In 1996 he published the book Living with Enthusiasm . The book Family Ties: A Message for Fathers followed in 2011 .

Perry married Virgina Lee on July 18, 1947 in the Logan Utah Temple . The marriage resulted in two daughters and a son. After his wife died in December 1974, he married Barbara Taylor Dayton in April 1976 in the Salt Lake Temple . In 1983 one of his daughters died.

In April 2015, Perry was admitted to hospital due to difficulty breathing. There he was diagnosed with cancer. He died of the disease in May 2015 at his home in Salt Lake City.
