LGV Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

LGV Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur , also LGV PACA , is the name of a high-speed line planned in the south of France ( Ligne à grande vitesse , LGV), which will connect the Côte d'Azur to the French after 2020 as a continuation of the LGV Méditerranée Aims to improve high-speed network .

Starting position

The French Riviera, the Côte d'Azur , is integrated into the French railway network via the Marseille – Ventimiglia railway line built between 1858 and 1872 . TGVs have been running from Paris to Toulon since 1984 , and from Paris to Nice since April 3, 1987. The travel time of just over three hours between Paris and Marseille made possible by the commissioning of LGV Rhône-Alpes (1992/94) and LGV Méditerranée (2001) also shortened travel times from northern France to destinations east of Marseille. Nevertheless, the fastest train connection Paris – Nice still takes around 5 hours and 45 minutes (as of July 2018). In French domestic air traffic, however, the Paris – Nice route is one of the most important connections with more than three million passengers per year.

The French state and the SNCF have been planning to build a high-speed line to Nice since the late 1990s in order to increase the rail market share on the highly sought-after Paris-Nice connection again. In addition, traffic relations along the Mediterranean coast, for example between Genoa and Barcelona , are to be improved.

Route variants

Variants of the possible routing of an LGV Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur were made available to the French public between February 21 and July 8, 2005 by the Commission nationale du débat public (CNDP), a state-owned government founded in 1995 to provide information and debate on large infrastructure projects Institution. While the railway line east of a station "Est Var" planned around Les Arcs / Le Muy will largely follow the A8 autoroute and merge into the existing line at Antibes , three major alternatives with numerous detailed variants have been proposed for the western section:

  • The routes summarized as Scénarios à un ax are based on the existing route. Starting in the east of Marseilles, they run either via Toulon or north of Toulon to the east. They enable short travel times between Marseille, Toulon and Nice as well as a travel time of around four hours on the Paris – Nice route. Depending on the detailed planning, construction costs between 5.9 and 8.4 billion euros (price level 2004) and an increase of 2 to 2.5 million passengers per year are expected.
  • The term Scénarios à deux axes was used to summarize route variants that branch off from the LGV Méditerranée north of Marseille and - partly north and partly south of Aix-en-Provence - lead via a new train station in the extreme north of the greater Toulon area towards Nice. Between Paris and Nice, travel times between 3 hours 40 minutes and 4 hours could be achieved, while driving from Marseille to the east would only achieve minor improvements. Depending on the detailed planning, construction costs of 4.9 to 7.5 billion euros (price level 2004) and an increase of 3 to 3.3 million annual passengers are forecast.
  • The Scénarios à trois axes summarize those plans that also do not include Toulon directly in the new connection. Branching off the LGV Méditerranée well north of Marseille, these routes either follow the A8 autoroute or run north of the Argens . With these variants, the route Paris – Nice could be covered in up to 3 hours 35 minutes. A branch line from Toulon to the A8 is planned for the fast connection from Marseille and Toulon to the east. Depending on the detailed planning, construction costs between 5.3 and 6 billion euros (2004 price level) and an increase of around 2.6 million passengers per year are expected.

In particular, the route variants that do not run parallel to the motorways met with, in some cases, violent rejection by local and regional bodies, who fear massive impairments to the quality of life or the relationship between , for example, in metropolitan areas, the Massif des Maures and Massif de la Sainte-Baume mountain ranges or agricultural areas Consider costs too unfavorable for expected benefits. The participating departments of Bouches-du-Rhône , Var and Alpes-Maritimes could not agree on a preferred route until summer 2008.

In 2013 a decision was made in favor of the first option: Marseille - Aubagne - Toulon - Le Muy - Cannes - Nice.

Time schedule

The owner and operator of the French rail infrastructure, Réseau ferré de France (RFF), planned to issue a recommendation for the cheapest route variant in mid-2008, later October 2008 was given as the date. Finally, on July 9, 2013, a three-phase schedule was announced:

  1. Expansion of the Marseille-Saint-Charles train station by 2030 (underground through tracks below today's above-ground terminus), expansion of the line to Aubagne and new construction Cannes - Nice.
  2. New construction in Aubagne - Toulon and Le Muy - Cannes by 2050.
  3. after 2050 new building in Toulon - Le Muy.
