La Maliciosa is with 2227  msnm one of the most important and highest mountains of the Sierra de Guadarrama , the central part of the Iberian Divide Mountains in Spain .

Geographical location

La Maliciosa is located in the northeast of the Comunidad de Madrid ( Spain ), framed in the east by the largest granite formation in Europe La Pedriza , and in the west by the valley La Barranca.

Its notch height is 153 m and with an unmistakable profile it protrudes clearly from the Castilian meseta . This makes it one of the most visible and significant mountains in the Sierra de Guadarrama . The south face is steeply sloping, in it several mountain streams arise, which allow a modest alpine vegetation. High pastures dominate the upper flanks, while below 1700  m there are sometimes dense stands of Scots pine . Much of the mountain lies within the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares Regional Park and the future Sierra de Guadarrama National Park .

At the summit, the borders run between the municipalities of Navacerrada , Becerril de la Sierra , El Boalo and Manzanares el Real , all of which are in the northeast of the Comunidad de Madrid in central Spain.

The Maliciosa is located in the extreme south of a 2 km long north-south mountain ridge that begins at the summit of the Bola del Mundo ( 2265  m ). The Bola del Mundo is part of the Cuerda Larga mountain range , which enables a popular high-altitude hike in a west-east direction with a spectacular panoramic view - especially when the moon is full - of Madrid.

At the top there is a trigonometric point from which you can enjoy an excellent view of the Sierra de Guadarrama .

etymology

The mountain was originally known as “Montaña Maliciosa” - “malicious mountain”. This is due to the difficulty of climbing it over the southern flanks. These routes are very steep and only manage a difference in altitude of over 1100 m over a short distance . The abbreviation was remembered later, and today the mountain is known as “La Maliciosa” or “Pico de la Maliciosa”. Furthermore, the mountain with its snow hood in the summit area resembles a human head, which is why it is also known colloquially as "La Monja" ( The Nun ). The name of the mountain has its origins in the 14th century and like the Maladeta in the Pyrenees , the Maliciosa is also said to be bewitched because its rock is also exposed to the forces of nature (wind, ice, sun and rain) and without protection.
