La Merced is the capital of the province Chanchamayo in the region Junin in Peru . La Merced had 24,629 inhabitants in 2017. 10 years earlier the population was 21,885.

Geographical location

The city is located in the Peruvian Central Cordillera at an altitude of 751  m . It is located 75 kilometers as the crow flies east of the city of Junín and 220 kilometers northeast of the state capital Lima . It is 305 km from Lima to La Merced on the paved road. It is located on the west bank of the Río Chanchamayo , which joins the Río Paucartambo to the Río Perené further north .

history

La Merced emerged from a settlement of Italian colonists who had settled there in 1872.
