La Strada ( Italian for 'The Street'; own spelling LA STRADA) is an international festival of street arts in Bremen . It has been held every summer since 1994 and is attended by up to 100,000 spectators.

history

The festival emerged from 1992 to 1994 from the broad cultural work of the Bremen cultural initiatives Quartier e. V. (today Quartier gGmbH ) and Kontorhaus - workshop for free stage art (today theaterkontor in the kontorhaus ). In 1994, the independent event La Strada developed from this , which initially took place in various parts of Bremen with street theater .

In 1999 the festival moved to the inner city of Bremen, whereby the events were spread over the entire inner city and mostly took place directly at tourist places. Since then, the event conception and organization have been and continue to be carried out by the theaterkontor in the kontorhaus of the Neue Gruppe Kulturarbeit e. V. perceived. In 2000, the festival in Bremen took place as an external, ten-day sub-program of the Expo 2000 world exhibition held in the Lower Saxony state capital Hanover . Due to renovation work on Bremen's market square , La Strada was relocated to the Bremer Wallanlagen in 2001 , where the festival then had its main venue until 2005. In 2006 La Strada returned to downtown Bremen, and since 2008 the ramparts have also been used again.

All events of the street festival, which takes place regularly in summer, are free of charge. With a few exceptions there are no stages, as the festival is geared towards the closeness between artists and audience and lives from it. In addition to the performances of the artists in the open air, the festival also includes an evening gala which takes place on the evenings of two festival days in a closed event room and which is subject to entry. The venue for the evening galas is the theater of the Bremen shakespeare company .
