action

The married couple Giovanni and Paola Sermonti live a peaceful and happy life with their children Irene and Andrea in Ancona on the Adriatic Sea . Giovanni is a psychiatrist and has his practice attached to the family home. Every day he lends his ear to the neuroses of his patients and shows understanding for the most curious stories.

On a Sunday Giovanni wants to go jogging with his son, but the project is prevented by a patient. Giovanni drives to a man who has already attempted suicide and who has now called him about a serious problem. When Giovanni arrives there, he tells him about his suspicion of cancer . Back at home, Giovanni finds out that his son Andrea had a fatal accident while diving with friends. The family falls into deep grief, but life goes on. Giovanni begins receiving patients again shortly after the funeral, but the sessions change. Giovanni is often out of the question. He ponders the missed opportunities to hang out with his son. The sessions with the patient who led him away from his son on the unlucky day are particularly difficult. His self-pity even leads to alienation from his wife, who suffers as much from the grief as he does.

When Paola receives a letter from a girl to her son Andrea, whom Andrea only knew briefly but describes the son so aptly, she absolutely wants to get to know the girl. However, Giovanni desperately tries to find the right words in a letter to Arianna. Arianna doesn't know anything about her son's death. Finally Paola decides to call the girl, but there is no appointment. Some time later the girl is at the door. She shows Giovanni photos of Andreas Zimmer. Andrea had taken the photos to show the girl her room. Arianna now wants to hitchhike to France with a friend. Giovanni, Paola and Irene drive the two to the French border that night. There the two youngsters get into a coach and leave the family of three on the beach in Menton .
