geography

Lac-Delage lies in the middle of the forested southern foothills of the Laurentine Mountains . The municipality surrounds the lake of the same name, Lac Delage (written without a hyphen to distinguish it), the place being on the northern bank. The lake is has an area of 49 hectares and is 26 meters deep. It is drained by the Rivière Delage, which flows half a kilometer into Lac Saint-Charles , the source lake of the Rivière Saint-Charles . Neighboring communities are Stoneham-et-Tewkesbury in the north and east and Québec in the south and west.

history

Lac Larron, the lake's former name, was located on the so-called Jesuit path (sentier des Jésuites) during the French rule . This route, used primarily by fur traders and Jesuit missionaries , connected the city of Québec with the region around Lac Saint-Jean to the north . The lake was part of the Seigneurie Saint-Ignace, but the area remained unused.

This did not change at first when British immigrants settled the area at the beginning of the 19th century and founded the village of Stoneham nearby. The reason for this was that the steep slopes around the lake were unfavorable for agriculture. In the 1850 / 1860s the painter Cornelius David Krieghoff lived in a hut on the shore and made several paintings with the lake as a motif. At the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, the Rockland Farm was built on the lake , a summer resort for high demands, which was modeled on a traditional farm. With the opening of a ski slope in 1940, the season was extended to include winter, and eight years later an access road was built.

In the course of the rapidly advancing suburbanization of the 1950s, the real estate company Delrano showed interest in the area around Lac Larron. In 1959 the Legislative Assembly passed a law establishing Lac-Delage. The name was a proposal by Prime Minister Maurice Duplessis , who wanted to honor the politician Cyrille Fraser Delâge , who had died two years earlier . The area of the new city, which should have 3,000 inhabitants when fully developed, was made up of parts of the parishes of Stoneham-et-Tewkesbury and Lac-Saint-Charles . The first chalet-style houses were built from 1963 onwards. Due to the oversaturation of the real estate market, development slowed down significantly from the mid-1970s, and the desired full expansion could not even come close. Lac-Delage has been part of the Communauté métropolitaine de Québec association since 2002 .
