U-God (born October 11, 1970 in Brooklyn , New York ; real name Lamont Jody Hawkins ) is an MC and member of the Wu-Tang Clan .

During the early days of the clan, U-God was one of the members with little publicity, but was able to raise his profile in later publications and has become known in recent years mainly through spectacular clashes with WU-Tang clan leader RZA . He released his first solo album Golden Arms Redemption in 1999.

Life

During the production of the first Wu-Tang album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) he was in prison for illicit drug and weapon possession. He hardly appears on the album: a short bridging part on the first single Protect Ya Neck and the opening rhymes on Da Mystery of Chessboxin ' . After his release from prison, he participated in the solo publications of other members. His raps can be found on various classics of the group, such as Winter Warz , Knuckleheadz and Black Jesus . On the second album of the Wu-Tang clan Wu-Tang Forever , he played a much more important role; Among other things, he was one of only three rappers who got a solo track on the album. Around the same time, his son was accidentally shot and wounded, in response to which the track A Better Tomorrow was created .

He was the eighth of the nine Wu-Tang members to release a solo album: Golden Arms Redemption shows a wide musical range from blaxploitation - funk to string sections. The usual number of clan members and friends at the time had guest appearances on the album.

In 2004, his public disputes with the Wu Tang clan began. He began a public dispute with RZA about royalties that it is said to have withheld from him. During this time he produced the LP Ugodz-illa presents the Hillside Scrambler independently of the clan under the alias Ugodz-illa . The dispute with RZA culminated in an emotionally charged telephone conversation that ran over a live radio broadcast. In retrospect, however, the conversation led to a provisional reconciliation: U-God was back on stage during the tour through Europe and North America in summer 2004.

Shortly after his second solo album within the clan, Mr. Xcitement (2005), he resumed the conflict. In an interview he held RZA personally responsible for the fact that U-God was not as well known as other clan members and complained about the bad treatment he would have received within the clan because of his lighter skin color. For the February 2006 tour he was back on the program and on the Wu Tang Clan's subsequent album - 8 Diagrams (2007) - he was involved in six of the sixteen pieces.

The follow-up album U-Gods - Dopium (2009) - also contained collaborations with members of the Wu Tang Clan and their environment, and the fourth studio album The Keynote Speaker (2013) was then even produced by RZA and released on RZA's Soul Temple Records label.
