architecture
The main facade of the courthouse on Hohenzollernstrasse is 124 meters long. The corner risks are formed by wing structures that border the property. The central building encloses a courtyard that provides light to the main staircase and the surrounding corridor. The rear of the facility consists of the prison with the attached office manager's house, which was designed accordingly with regard to its later location on a residential street.
The building complex is plastered and structured using sandstone . Erected in neo-baroque forms, the main building looks like a palace. It is three-storey with a basement , a high mansard roof , a strongly accentuated central projection with a protruding portico and corner projections. The facade is structured by horizontal plaster strips in the base zone, simply highlighted window frames, colossal pilaster strips and pilasters , tail gables of the risalits and neo-baroque window crowns on the upper floor of the central section.
The main room of the building - the jury courtroom - is emphasized by high neo-baroque crowned windows and the curved gable with a relief field and the representation of two larger than life female figures with the attributes of tablets of the law, sword and helmet or book, staff and oath gesture.
The four to five-storey prison wing was built for 100 prisoners , in accordance with the ministerial regulations for new prison buildings at the time. The facades facing Rheinbahnstraße with corner and central projections are richly structured.
The attached two-storey residential building with office leader plaster façade and hipped roof has inside despite some changes on the ground floor nor original ceramics - tiles , over the wooden staircase as well as the original door frames and door panels.
The regional and district court Mönchengladbach forms a structural and historical unit with the judicial prison and the associated office manager's house. The maintenance of the building complex is in the public interest for artistic, scientific, in particular architectural, local and social history as well as urban planning reasons.
