The Rudolstadt Theater is a theater in Rudolstadt in Thuringia . It traces its tradition back to the princely summer theater founded in 1792/93. The Thuringian State Theater Rudolstadt is also the main place of activity of the Thuringian Symphony Orchestra Saalfeld-Rudolstadt . For this reason, the full name is Thuringian State Theater Rudolstadt - Thuringian Symphony Orchestra Saalfeld-Rudolstadt GmbH . The theater is supported by a special purpose association to which the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt (50 percent) as well as the cities of Rudolstadt (38 percent) and Saalfeld / Saale (12 percent) belong.

history

The theater was built as a summer theater on the Anger at the instigation of the ruling princes in Rudolstadt . From 1794 to 1803 the theater was played by the Weimar theater troupe. Goethe signed the contract for this on May 12, 1794. The last point was particularly controversial because he granted free entry not only to the court society , but also to their guests. Goethe agreed, but it is well known that the guest performances in Bad Lauchstädt and Rudolstadt were a “brilliant business” and the chamberlain “smiled with his whole face” when settling the accounts.

The theater still stands today as it was then on the Anger , which was used as a fairground for the shooting festival , the Rudolstadt bird shooting . There were also people from all over Thuringia and as guests of the prince of the nobility from Weimar , Sondershausen , Greiz , Schleiz and Lobenstein . The rulers mingled with the people and "this condescension won the hearts of everyone" . Only during this time (until 1871) was played, including the pieces by Friedrich Schiller , who was present twice himself. It was played in a boarded-up beam construction, which the Weimar actors called the "Bratwurstbude". Inside, walking boards covered the pale lawn. In the separated part of the standing room, the farmers and apprentices caused vapors with their schnapps and cheese sandwiches, which made it necessary to use the fans in the courtyard box above .

The theater has been rebuilt several times over the course of history. The renovation of 1848 was interrupted because the prince did not forgive his country children for the revolutionary demands. Further alterations took place in 1868 and 1956, until the historic half-timbered construction was torn down in 1983 and the auditorium and the stage were redesigned.

In the mid-1970s, the theater became more political under the direction of Drama Director Klaus Fiedler : He brought critical topics to the stage that were staged in a contemporary way. In 1987 the artistic director Manfred Heine and his literary and dramaturgical advisor Harald Gerlach were dismissed for political reasons. Horst Liebig was appointed as his successor.

After a merger with the Thuringian State Theater Eisenach in 1995, the Thuringian State Theater has been working independently again since 2003.

The Rudolstadt and Nordhausen Theaters have been exchanging their productions since 2004 . The Nordhausen Theater brings music theater and ballet to Rudolstadt and receives theater productions from Rudolstadt.

Specialized theater

In 2008 the theater is divided into three sections:

  • the big house , in which all classics as well as operas, musicals and contemporary pieces are performed. The spectators sit like in an amphitheater .
  • the make-up box , in which musical entertainment and comedies are shown. Here the spectators sit at tables and can talk to the gastronomy during the play and linger after the performance.
  • since 2003 the theater tumult , which aims to appeal to young audiences. The spectators place themselves on a multi-level platform on seat cushions.
