Meaning of the name

Landolt , a male was originally first name with the meaning 'of the country Wielding' from ahd. Country 'country, area, area' and waltan 'violence have dominion' of the patronymic with it and the family name has become.

Origin, places of origin

The family name goes back to at least two original genders, one in the Zürcher Weinland (especially Kleinandelfingen ) and the other in Näfels in Glarus . The Landolt, who are based in the city of Zurich (attested from 1370), in the Enge , in Thalwil and in Adliswil , presumably originally descended from the Näfels family. However, several representatives of the Kleinandelfingen family have had Zurich citizenship since 1875. Today's Landolt from Aargau, Bern and West Switzerland originally go back to the Stadtzürcher and Engemer Landolt.
