Ballot for the state election

The state election in the People's State of Hesse in 1924 was the third in the People's State of Hesse to become the State Parliament of Hesse . It took place on December 7, 1924 and led to a confirmation of the governing coalition with only low votes by the parties compared to the previous state election in the People's State of Hesse in 1921 . The December 1924 Reichstag elections took place on the same day .

initial situation

While the Reichstag election in May 1924 had strengthened the radical parties, the state election took place six months later in a politically more relaxed phase. The end of hyperinflation had resulted in economic stabilization. The further background to the political situation is presented in the Reichstag election in December 1924 .

In the People's State of Hesse, Ulrich II's cabinet had ruled as a Weimar coalition since the first election in 1919 .

Due to the distribution of denominations, the center clearly had its party stronghold in Rheinhessen, in Upper Hesse the HBB dominated.

Otto by Brentano di Tremezzo

The newly elected state parliament met on January 29, 1925 to elect a Hessian Prime Minister. Otto von Brentano di Tremezzo tried to form a middle-class coalition of the center, the DDP, the DVP and the farmers' union. Since these four parties only had 34 seats in the state parliament, this coalition would have been dependent on votes from other parties. In the election for Prime Minister Otto von Brentano di Tremezzo only received the 34 votes of his supporter parties. In addition to the votes of the SPD, Carl Ulrich also received the support of DNVP and NSFB and received 32 votes. With its four mandates, the KPD supported neither of the two candidates, but Daniel Greiner . No candidate had received the required absolute majority. The second ballot also gave the same result.

After the attempt to form a government of the center failed, talks broke out about the continuation of the previous coalition. On March 24, 1925, the current President Ulrich (SPD) was re-elected under the pressure of a threatened dissolution of the state parliament. As a result, Ulrich II's cabinet remained in office.
