history
Originally there was only one constituency in the state elections in Burgenland. After the 1977 regional election in Burgenland had been challenged by the Constitutional Court, the Constitutional Court recognized that the designation of “constituencies” in Article 26 of the Federal Constitutional Act , i.e. in the plural, must be interpreted as meaning that there must be at least two constituencies per federal state. As a result, the affected federal states of Carinthia, Salzburg and Burgenland changed their state election regulations. Burgenland carried out the necessary adaptation with the 1978 state election order passed on October 30th, which divided Burgenland into four constituencies. The Eisenstadt-Umgebung district as well as the free cities of Eisenstadt and Rust belonged to constituency I together with the Neusiedl am See district . As early as 1995, with the state election regulations in 1995, another reform of the constituencies took place, in which the number of constituencies was increased from four to seven and the Eisenstadt-Umgebung district with the cities of Rust and Eisenstadt was elevated to a separate constituency, constituency 2 .
The SPÖ has achieved a relative majority in every election since the constituency was founded, and its result in constituency 2 was always just below the national result. The SPÖ achieved its best result in 2005 with 49.5%. The ÖVP regularly scores in state elections in constituency 2 with a result that corresponds to its national average. With 36.5% it achieved its best result in 2005 and, like in all other elections, was clearly in second place. The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) recorded its best election result in the constituency with 15.0% in 1996, most recently they received 9.1% of the vote in 2020. For Die Grünen Burgenland (GRÜNE) constituency 2 is one of the strongest regions in Burgenland, in 2020 they achieved their best result nationwide, whereby in 2020 they achieved their best result ever in a constituency with 8.9%.
