Lapseki is a small Turkish town on the east coast of the Dardanelles in the province of Çanakkale . It is also the capital of the district of the same name in the north of the province. The city unites almost half of the district's population (2018: 48%). From here a ferry runs over the Dardanelles to Gelibolu .
The place is on the site of the ancient Lampsakos , of which almost nothing has survived.
In 1235 the church council of Lampsakos took place here. The Orthodox Patriarchates of Antioch , Alexandria and Jerusalem decided to restore the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and consecrated Ioakim I , Archbishop of Tarnowo, Patriarch of Bulgaria.
The district borders in the south on the central district ( Merkez ) Çanakkale and on the district Çan and in the east on the district Biga . In the north the Dardanelles form the natural border. In addition to the district town, the district consists of two other municipalities ( Belediye ): Çardak (3,591) and Umurbey (2,497 pop.). The district also includes 40 villages ( Köy ) with an average population of 203 residents per village. Adatepe is the largest with 1,122 inhabitants. The population density of the district is below the provincial average.
