View of Eceabat

Eceabat is a city and a district in the northwestern Turkish province of Çanakkale . Both are at the end of the Gelibolu peninsula in the European part of the province. The city lies on the Dardanelles ( Hellespont in antiquity ) opposite the provincial capital Çanakkale . It is the starting point of the ferry that connects Europe and Asia along the E-87 . The ferry covers a distance of about 5.5 kilometers. The city is home to almost two thirds of the district's population.

The district forms the southern part of the Gelibolu peninsula. In the northeast it borders on Gelibolu County , otherwise it is surrounded by water. About four kilometers south of Eceabat is the village of Kilitbahir with the fortress of the same name, where the Dardanelles have their narrowest point at 1.3 kilometers. On the other side of the peninsula, about eight kilometers west of the city, a ferry runs from Kabatepe to the island of Gökçeada .

In addition to the district town, the Eceabat district also consists of twelve villages ( Köy ) with an average of 269 inhabitants. Kilidülbahir is the largest village with 644 inhabitants. The district has the lowest population density within Çanakkale Province.

history

Kilitbahir fortress at the narrowest point of the Dardanelles

Eceabat is located on the site of ancient Madytos . Due to its location at the narrowest point of the Hellespont, the area at the southern end of the peninsula was of particular importance in ancient times. Alexander the Great crossed here on his campaign to Asia, as did the Ottomans in the opposite direction to the conquest of Thrace and finally Constantinople . During the First World War , the Battle of Gallipoli took place here in February 1915 . Their battlefields are still shown today as sights.

traffic

Two car ferries run alternately from Eceabat to Çanakkale and back. The Istanbul Seyahat long-distance buses from Istanbul to Çanakkale run through the town. In addition, the E 87 leads through the village and via the ferries to Çanakkale.

Kabatepe Tanıtma Merkezi Ve Müzesi

The "Kabatepe Tanıtma Merkezi Ve Müzesi" memorial site is an institution that commemorates the fallen of the ANZAC troops in 1915 and the Battle of Gallipoli . There you can see the graves and memorial stones of the fallen, as well as trenches and other monuments by car.
