Ayvacık is a city and a district in the northwestern Turkish province of Çanakkale . The county seat is about 60 km south of the provincial capital Çanakkale on the E-87 from Çanakkale to İzmir . At the end of 2018, the city was home to 26.5 percent of the district's population.
The county
The district is located in the southwest of the province on the Aegean Sea and borders in the north on the districts of Ezine and Bayramiç , in the east on the province of Balıkesir (district of Edremit ).
In the extreme southwest of the district lies Cape Baba, the westernmost point of the Anatolian mainland and thus the continent of Asia . The area is mountainous, about ten kilometers west of the district town is the highest mountain, Kavak Dağı, at 672 meters. Ayvacık forms the southern end of the historical area of the Troas . In the west lies the Aegean Sea, in the south the Gulf of Edremit (Edremit Körfezi) .
The river Tuzla Çayı flows through the district in a westerly direction and flows west of Tuzla into the Mediterranean Sea. The Ayvacık dam, which was completed in 2008, is located 4 km east of the city of Ayvacık on Tuzla Çayı .
In addition to the district town, the district consists of another municipality ( Belediye , Belde ): Küçükkuyu with 10,045 inhabitants and 64 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 229 inhabitants. One village has more than a thousand inhabitants: Gülpınar with 1,344 inhabitants. The population density is below the provincial average of 55 inhabitants per km².
