biography

Career

Larry's origins are not documented. In 2011, the animal welfare organization Battersea Dogs and Cats Home caught the feral cat Larry. He has since served as the mouse hunter in Prime Minister May's cabinet and lives at 10 Downing Street . His predecessor was Sybil .

Under David Cameron

Larry was introduced to US President Barack Obama by Prime Minister Cameron in 2011 .

A celebration was held on February 15, 2012 in honor of Larry's first year of service as a mouse hunter.

On the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II's jubilee , Larry threw himself into the festivities. When George Osborne found his cat Freya on June 24th and took her in at 11 Downing Street, Larry soon began to be on good terms with her.

On August 28, 2012, Larry first killed a mouse in public. In September 2012 he received the official title of Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office .

Since Larry did not achieve the desired yield of mice, David Cameron dismissed him in 2012 and instead used Freya. There was also a violent scuffle with Freya. Allegedly Freya dominated the fight and is also a better mouse hunter, as her time as a stray is said to have hardened her. Finally, however, Larry's spokesman said in October 2012 that the two cats could coexist . Since then, they have officially shared the work.

On December 21, 2013 Larry was wearing a Santa Claus - Hat .

Since Larry's birthday cannot be precisely determined, his birthday was celebrated on February 15, 2013, one year after his first year of service celebrations.

In June 2013 Larry hesitated for the first time to come to 10 Downing Street with David Cameron, he had to be persuaded.

In September 2013 it became public that tensions between David Cameron and Larry were growing. It has been reported that Cameron cannot cope with the cat hair on his suit and the smell of cat food in his apartment. A spokesman for the Prime Minister emphasized that there is still a perfect relationship between the two. Larry was supported on Twitter , but there was a briefing against him in October 2013, in which it turned out that he had caught four mice in two weeks, but it was not certain whether Larry could still carry out his office in the future.

In early 2014, Larry was seen as the highlight of the visit to 10 Downing Street when he attended King's School from Plymouth . Larry also re-established himself as the much stronger cat on Downing Street: Freya was found about a mile from her home after Larry chased her away. The next day, however, Freya was chauffeured home by a member of Osborne's staff. Larry retained his position after the cabinet reshuffle in July 2014 . He was later photographed relaxing in front of the premier's apartment during a heat wave. Freya was hit by a car on Whitehall in early August 2014 , which, according to media reports, didn't seem to bother Larry. In November 2014, Freya was sent to Kent by the Osbornes from Downing Street . There were rumors that Osborne's dog Lola didn't get along with her, which Osborne always denies.

Under Theresa May

Even after the Cameron family moved from No. 10 Larry kept his post as Chief Mouser after David Cameron's resignation as Prime Minister following the Brexit referendum. On his last appearance in Parliament as Prime Minister, Cameron denied claims that he disliked Larry and showed a photo of him with Larry on his lap as evidence. After Theresa May took office as the new Prime Minister, there were repeated arguments between Larry and his colleague Palmerston, who works as a mouse hunter in the State Department . Theresa May said she liked Larry, but had always preferred dogs to cats. Larry has the say in some areas of Number 10 , but he stays away from May's office.

Under Boris Johnson

Even after Theresa May resigned , Larry was taken on by Prime Minister Boris Johnson .

Awards

In October 2012, an official blue plaque was placed on the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London in memory of his famous former resident Larry .

Others

Larry became popular with the people incredibly quickly, got his own website, a Twitter account, and in 2011 the book "The Larry Diaries: Downing Street - the first 100 days as Chief Rat Catcher" was published . The Daily Telegraph also produced a series of pictures to mark Larry's two-year anniversary in office.
