Laurenz Engwiller

Laurenz Engwiller (born May 16, 1819 in St. Gallen ; † January 8, 1894 in Herisau ; resident in Speicher ) was a Swiss pastor , clerk and cantonal councilor from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Laurenz Engwiller was a son of Johannes Engwiller, Mesmer to St. Laurenzen in St. Gallen , and Katharina Deutsch. In 1848 Laurenz Engwiller married Elisabeth Wirth, daughter of Johann Georg Wirth, dean in St. Gallen. He entered into a second marriage in 1866 with Katharina Friederika Schläpfer, daughter of Johannes Schläpfer.

He attended high school in St. Gallen. From 1838 to 1841 he studied theology in Jena and Bonn . In 1841 he was ordained in St. Gallen. Also in 1841 he was appointed vicar in Herisau and from 1841 to 1843 in Wald . From 1843 to 1852 Engwiller was pastor in Rehetobel and from 1852 to 1865 in Teufen . As a field preacher in the Sonderbund War , he gave the concluding sermon of victory and thanksgiving to the general staff.

A sore throat forced his resignation from the pastor's office in 1865. From 1865 to 1893 he was the first Ausserrhoder council writer who was not a citizen of the canton. From 1865 to 1877, Laurenz Engwiller was an actuary of the military commission and cantonal police director . In 1870 he was elected to the Grand Council or Cantonal Council. He held this office until 1893.
