Lawrence Pennell

Lawrence T. Pennell PC QC (born March 11, 1915 in Brantford , Ontario , † August 9, 2008 ) was a Canadian lawyer and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada , who was a member of the House of Commons and Minister for a few years . He was most recently from 1968 to 1985 Judge of the Supreme Court of Ontario ( Supreme Court of Ontario ) and at the same time from 1971 to 1977 Chancellor of McMaster University .

Life

After attending Smithville High School and two years of work for the steel company Dofasco , Pennell completed a degree in Politics and Economics at McMaster University. After graduation, he began in 1938 to study law at the Osgoode Hall Law School of York University , which he graduated with a Doctor of Law (LL.D.). He then took up a position as a lawyer and did his military service in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War , where he was promoted to captain ( flight lieutenant ).

In the general election of June 18, 1962 , he was elected as a candidate for the Liberal Party for the first time as a member of the lower house, where he represented the constituency of Brent-Haldimand until he resigned in May 1968 .

At the beginning of his parliamentary activities, he was initially from May to December 1963 Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee on Privileges and Elections, of which he was Chairman between February 18, 1964 and April 3, 1965. From February 18, 1964 to April 3, 1965, he was also the chairman of the Standing Committee on Banking and Commerce, and between June 30, 1964 and July 6, 1965, he assumed his first government office as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, before going beyond that served as chairman of the House Standing Committee on Finance, Trade and Economic Affairs from April 5 to September 8, 1965.

On July 7, 1965, Pennell was appointed Solicitor General to the 19th Canadian Cabinet by Prime Minister Lester Pearson and held this office until the end of Pearson's term on April 19, 1968. At the same time he was from July 7, 1965 to September 30 1966 also Minister without Portfolio .
