The Ponant Explorer class is a cruise ship class of the French shipping company Compagnie du Ponant .

Eight ships have been ordered from the class, named after French explorers. They should Template: future / in 2 yearscome into operation between 2018 and 2022 .

General

In March 2016, a preliminary contract was signed between Ponant and the Vard shipyard, which belongs to the Fincantieri group, for four ships with delivery from summer 2018 to summer 2019. The construction contract for an initial four ships was signed in August 2016. At the beginning of March 2018, two more ships were ordered for delivery in 2020. The shell construction is carried out at Vard in Tulcea , Romania , the final equipment in Søviknes. A ship of the class costs US $ 110 million each.

Two ships each were delivered in 2018 and 2019, and another in 2020. The sixth ship in the series is also scheduled for 2020. The ships of the Ponant Explorer class, named after French explorers, are operated under the flag of the French overseas territory Wallis and Futuna and are registered in Mata Utu . The ship class was designed by the ship architecture firm Stirling Design International in Nantes , which was also responsible for the ships in the Boreal class. The concept for the interior design comes from the French designer studio Jean-Philippe Nuel. At the shipyard, the ship type is referred to as VARD 6 08.

In 2019 Ponant ordered two more ships, a further development of the ships of the Ponant Explorer class, for the Paul Gauguin Cruises brand. They should be delivered in 2022.

history

The construction of the first ship of the class, the Le Lapérouse , began with the first steel cut on January 3, 2017. The keel was laid on March 1, 2017, the launch on December 18, 2017. In January 2018, the ship met in Norway for the final equipment a. The Le Lapérouse was delivered on June 15, 2018. She was put into service on June 19 and christened in Reykjavik on July 10, 2018 .

Construction of Le Champlain also began on March 1, 2017 . The ship arrived in Søviknes, Norway on April 27, 2018 for final equipment.

Construction of Le Bougainville and Le Dumont d'Urville began in May 2017 .

On April 4, 2018, construction of the Le Bellot and Le Surville began in Tulcea.

The transfer of the Le Jacques Cartier from Romania to Norway in tow with the Fairplay 33 began in December 2019.

The ships have seven decks . They are equipped with 92 passenger cabins, including four suites, so that 184 passengers can be accommodated on board with double occupancy. The cabins, which all have their own balcony, are spread across decks 3 to 6. There are two restaurants and two lounges as well as a theater on board. In the hull , below the waterline in the midship area, there is an underwater lounge known as the "Blue Eye", which is intended to enable passengers to take a look at the underwater world. The underwater lounge was designed by French architect Jacques Rougerie .

There is a swimming pool in the stern area . The ships are also equipped with a bathing platform at the stern. From here, the Zodiacs can also be used for expeditions and water sports equipment.

The ships are powered by diesel-electric technology . The electricity for the propulsion machinery and the work on board, four diesel generators, each with 1,366  kW power (1,707  kVA apparent power ) is available. Propulsion is carried out by two electric motors, each with an output of 2,000 kW, which drive two controllable pitch propellers. The ships are equipped with a bow thruster with a controllable pitch propeller.

Ships classified by Bureau Veritas are marked with the “Cleanship” label, which is awarded by the classification society for compliance with certain MARPOL regulations with regard to anti-fouling paintwork on the hull, ballast water management and exhaust gas treatment.

The hulls of the ships are reinforced with ice ( ice class 1C).

The name Le Kerguelen was originally intended for the fourth ship in the class . In March 2017 this was changed to Le Dumont d'Urville . The planned name of the sixth ship was changed from Le Surville to Le Jacques Cartier in 2019 .
