The Le Boréal is a cruise ship owned by the French cruise company Compagnie du Ponant .

history

The ship was built under the hull number 6192 at the Fincantieri - Cantieri Navali Italiani shipyard in Ancona, Italy . The keel of the ship was laid on May 6, 2009, and it was undocked on October 1, 2009. The ship, which was completed in April 2010, was delivered to the client on April 27. It was baptized on May 3, 2010 in Marseille , godmother was the French finance minister.

incident

On November 18, 2015, there was a fire in the ship's engine room. The ship was drifting in the South Atlantic near the Falkland Islands and threatened to run aground. In a rescue operation by the Royal Navy , all 347 passengers and crew were saved. Since it was not possible to repair the ship in the Chilean port of Punta Arenas , it was loaded onto the semi-submersible ship Kang Sheng Kou on January 15, 2016, when it arrived in Genoa in March 2016 for repairs. According to the French authorities' report published in July 2016, the fire was the result of a clogged fuel filter.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by two electric motors with an output of 2,300  kW each. The motors act on two fixed propellers . The ship reaches a speed of up to 16  knots .

There are three diesel generators for the power supply, each with an output of 1,600 kW ( apparent power : 2,000  kVA ), a generator driven by the main engines with an output of 1,600 (apparent power: 2,000 kVA) and an emergency generator with an output of 600 kW (apparent power: 750 kVA) are available.

The ship has seven decks, six of which are accessible to passengers. There are 132 passenger cabins on board, which can accommodate 264 passengers with double occupancy. All cabins are outside cabins. Only eight cabins do not have their own balcony. During expedition cruises in Antarctica, the passenger capacity is limited to 200 people.

The hull of the ship is reinforced with ice ( ice class 1C), so the ship can also be used in the polar regions. In order to be able to bring passengers ashore during expedition cruises even in areas without port infrastructure, the ship is equipped with twelve Zodiac inflatable boats.

Trivia

The ship was named the best new cruise ship of the year by the European Cruiser Association (EUCRAS) in 2010.

The ship was the subject of the documentary series "Mighty Ships" on the Discovery Channel .
