Location of Le Magny in the Grand Est region

Le Magny is a former French commune in the Vosges department in the region of Grand Est . It belonged to the Arrondissement Épinal and the communal association ( Communauté de communes ) Val de Vôge, founded in 2006 . On January 1, 2013, Le Magny was incorporated into the neighboring municipality of Fontenoy-le-Château .

geography

Le Magny is located at an altitude of 276 m above sea level, nine kilometers southwest of Bains-les-Bains in the extreme south of Lorraine on the border with the Franche-Comté region , more spaciously in the middle of the triangle Vittel - Épinal - Vesoul on the edge of the Vôge plateau . The small village lies on a terrace above the Côney .

The area of the 3.53 km² former municipal area comprises a section of the undulating landscape east of the upper Saône valley . The northern boundary of the district is the Côney, which draws several river loops here and provides drainage to the southwest to the Saône. The Canal des Vosges waterway runs north and parallel to the river . The alluvial valley of the Côney is an average of 250 m and has a maximum width of 300 meters. At 242 meters above sea level, on the banks of the Côney on the border with the municipality of Mailleroncourt-Saint-Pancras, the topographically lowest point in the Vosges department is reached.

From the river valley of the Côney the district extends southwards over a steep slope to the adjacent agriculturally used plateau, which reaches a height of 300 m. The eastern border of the district of Le Magny is the Ruisseau la Becene , which flows into the Côney. An extensive forest area ( Bois Saint-Georges ) dominates further to the southeast , of which Le Magny has a share of around 60 hectares. The steep slope on the Côney and the west and north-west of the municipality are also covered by forests ( Le Grand Bois de la Vaivre ). In geological and tectonic terms, the terrain consists of red sandstone from the Lower Triassic . Neighboring communities of Le Magny were Montmotier in the north, Fontenoy-le-Château in the east, Fontenois-la-Ville in the south, Mailleroncourt-Saint-Pancras in the south-west and Ambiévillers in the north-west.

history

The name Magny (earlier with the addition lou Mesnil devant Fontenoi ) has been documented since the 13th century. The place was long in the area of the Terres surséance , which has been claimed for centuries by the County of Burgundy and the Duchy of Lorraine . From 1508 on, there were several contracts to belong to the area. It was not until the Treaty of Besançon between Louis XIV and Duke Leopold of Lorraine , signed on August 25, 1704, that the border was finally determined. Le Magny came to Lorraine with a few other villages while Fougerolles became French. From 1704 until the French Revolution, Le Magny belonged to the Bailiwick of Remiremont in Lorraine, but ecclesiastically still to the parish Fontenois-la-Ville in the diocese of Besançon (Franche-Comté) until 2000 .

There is no church in Le Magny. The Church of Saint Mansuy in Fontenoy-le-Château is responsible for pastoral care.

The mayor and school building (mairie-école) was built in 1870/1871.

The few people in employment in Le Magny are employed in agriculture and forestry as well as small service companies in the village or the surrounding area.

The main road through the village leads along the Côney to Fontenoy-le-Château . Less well-developed, narrow streets lead from Le Magny to the neighboring towns to the south. The nearest train station ( Bains-les-Bains ) is ten kilometers east of Le Magny.
