Le Monde illustré ( German  Die Illustrierte Welt ) was a French-language illustrated weekly magazine that appeared in France between 1857 and 1940 and again between 1945 and 1948 .

history

The first edition of the 16-page Le Monde illustré appeared on Saturday, April 18, 1857, and showed an illustration of the British general election in London by William Frederick Measom under the title engraved by Hercule Louis Catenacci . The Monde illustré was founded by Achille Bourdilliat (1818-1882), who stated that his publishing bookstore Libraire Nouvelle on the Boulevard des Italiens was the editorial office , but it was printed at 15 Rue Bréda.

Since its first appearance, it has been in direct competition with the Parisian L'Illustration, founded in 1843 . The Monde illustré cost 30 cents in Paris in 1857  . or in the départements 35 cents, while the illustration at this time was 75 cents. was more than twice as expensive; An annual subscription was CHF 36 for  illustration , while Monde illustré was only CHF 18. Another long-standing competitor was the 8-page L'Univers illustré , published from 1858 , which initially sold for only 15 cents. was offered.

While in the early years it carried the addition of Journal hebdomadaire under the title, it was dispensed with in later years. At the beginning of 1938 the Monde illustré merged with the Miroir du monde and then bore the title Le Monde illustré / Miroir du monde for several years from No. 4173 . The last edition for the time being (No. 4296) appeared on June 8, 1940, another publication has been suspended since the occupation of Paris on June 14, 1940.

The next regular issue (No. 4297) appeared on February 22, 1945. In terms of presentation, it now resembled American Life , with a portrait of Georgi Konstantinowitsch Schukow on the front page . At the end of 1948, Monde illustré merged with France Illustration to form France Illustration / Le Monde illustré . In 1955 the name Le Monde illustré disappears completely when the France Illustration merges with the Nouveau Férmina to form the Nouveau Fémina et France Illustration , or a short time later only under the title Fémina Illustration .
