Leander (name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leander is the Latin form of the Greek male given name Λέανδρος (Leandros) and is made up of the Attic variant λεώς (leōs) of the word λάος (laos) "people" and the root form (* ανδρ ·) of the word ἀνήρ (anēr) "man "Together, thus roughly the meaning" people man "or" man of the people ".

The frequent ad hoc etymologization, which interprets the name as a combination of the components λέων (leōn) "lion" and the root form of ἀνήρ, is linguistically untenable, since λέων as a noun of the consonant declination uses the stem * λεοντ · would require.

The name is also common as a family name.
