The Marella Discovery 2 (formerly: Legend of the Seas , German: Legende der Meere ) is a cruise ship owned by the Marella Cruises shipping company and belongs to the Vision class. The ship was designed for worldwide cruises and is one of the fastest cruise lines in the world.

history

The Legend of the Seas 2014 in Oslo

The ship was built as Legend of the Seas in the shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique , Saint-Nazaire in France for the shipping company Royal Caribbean International . It was christened by Cindy Pritzker, Jay Pritzker's wife . The ship's maiden voyage took place on May 16, 1995. In February 2013 Royal Caribbean International had the ship modernized for around 50 million US dollars in a shipyard in Singapore and expanded with many new facilities.

In April 2017 the ship was renamed TUI Discovery 2 and put into service at Thomson Cruises on May 14, 2017 . The ship was previously rebuilt in Cádiz . In October 2017 the ship was renamed Marella Discovery 2 as part of the renaming of the shipping company in Marella Cruises .

Incidents

Incident 2013

On November 25, 2013, the Legend of the Seas lost a lifeboat when she was anchored off Cabo San Lucas . The ship sailed for four days without the lifeboat. It was reattached when the ship arrived in Cabo San Lucas four days later.

Propulsion and maneuvering aids

The Legend of the Seas is propelled by two fixed propellers. These are driven by three-phase synchronous motors (manufacturer: Alstom Marine) via shaft systems . Thanks to the high drive power of over 20  MW per engine, the Legend of the Seas enables a cruising speed of over 24 knots at propeller speeds of up to 145 / min  .

Cabins and on-board equipment

With a gross tonnage of 69,472, the ship offers space for 2,074 passengers and 726 crew members spread over eleven decks. The equipment of the Legend of the Seas includes various restaurants, bars and lounges, a vitality spa and fitness center, a screen on the pool deck, a covered pool area for adults, two swimming pools, four whirlpools, a mini golf course, a climbing wall, a jogging path, a beauty salon, various shops and an extensive entertainment program.

Use of the ship

The Legend of the Seas has been touring Asia in recent years. The ship returned to the Mediterranean in the summer of 2013. In the winter of 2013/2014 the ship was used in the Caribbean and for Panama Canal cruises, as well as for transatlantic cruises. In the summer of 2014, the Legend of the Seas was deployed in Northern Europe .
