Legends Never Die is a song by the US pop / rock band Against the Current . It was produced for the League of Legends World Championship 2017 and released on September 14, 2017. The music team from the game developer and host of this tournament, Riot Games , played a key role in the production. Together with the official music video, which was released on October 18, 2017, the song has hundreds of millions of views on YouTube.

background

The League of Legends World Championship ("Worlds") is the most important professional tournament in the League of Legends computer game and is held annually in a different country. These are each accompanied by a theme song, which is a collaboration between Riot Games and a prominent performer and relates to the game. For example, Imagine Dragons contributed the song Warriors in 2014 and Zedd contributed two versions of his song Ignite in 2016 and performed them live on the day of the final.

The song for the Worlds 2017 was initially created as an instrumental version within the Riot Games music team. Alex Seaver wrote the text. This became known in the EDM field under the name Mako after his song Beam was remixed by Dannic , which was released on Revealed Recordings and played at festivals around the world. Justin Tranter, who was involved in Justin Bieber's Sorry , was also involved in the production. Chrissy Costanza was chosen for the vocals because she plays and streams the game herself. Her band Against the Current is also closely connected to the host country China through various tours.

The band's mandatory live performance took place at the opening ceremony of the finals at the Beijing National Stadium . During the performance, a dragon from the game was projected into the arena using augmented reality . The broadcast of this event was watched by 57.6 million viewers and won the Sports Emmy Award in the Outstanding Live Graphic Design category .

Music video

After initially only the audio version was published, the official music video followed on October 18, 2017 on the League of Legends channel.

The video is an animated cinematic and begins with a sequence in which a person can be seen from behind in the players' tunnel of a stadium. The majority of the video consists of battle scenes of the characters Ashe, Lee Sin and Garen from League of Legends. At first, their actions fail, after which they continue to train and improve their skills. After perfecting these, they can use it to take out multiple enemies in combat at the same time. The video ends with the sequence from the beginning in which the person walks inside the stadium where the spectators await. Now you can see that it is a League of Legends player who is on the way to the final of the World Championship. The last sequence shows the national stadium in front of the silhouette of Beijing , where the final took place.

The music video was viewed 25 million times on YouTube and was nominated for an Annie Award in the Best Animated Television / Broadcast Commercial category.
