Leisure 17 is a series of sport boats from the British company Cobramold Ltd (which was later renamed Brinecraft Ltd). The yacht is mainly designed for cruising in coastal waters. The keel keel version is suitable for trips in tidal waters due to its shallow draft and the ability to dry out and is therefore very popular in the German Wadden Sea .

history

The boat has a made hand-layed fiberglass reinforced plastic - torso with a quality of at least 1836 grams per square meter (6 oz./ft²) and a keel made of cast iron. Most of the 4500 units built from 1965 to 1990 were equipped with a keel keel ( Leisure 17 KK ) and 65 cm draft , the middle keel version ( Leisure 17 MK ) has a draft of 100 cm. From 1980 the Leisure 17 SL was marketed with a new design, the superstructure became a little higher and the cabin a little more spacious.

deck

The cockpit can comfortably accommodate four people. There is a spacious locker between the cockpit and stern , although some ships were also equipped with a second locker under one of the throws . The Leisure 17 usually has no guard rail , however, mostly a nose and tail basket that exist in different versions. On the forecastle of older ships, a pipe leads the anchor chain into the chain locker below; another deck layout has a spacious anchor locker in the forepeak , which is accessible from the forecastle through a large hatch and completely separated from the interior.

Sails and rigging

Rig of Leisure 17

The Leisure 17 is rigged as a top rigged sloop and can be sailed with a mainsail as well as with a storm jib, jib, genoa or spinnaker . The mainsail can be reefed around the rotating boom with a snail reef . If the sail is reefed, the boom vang can no longer be used. In the meantime, some of the boats have been retrofitted with furling genoa and (rarely) furling mainsails by their owners, the snail reef can easily be replaced by a binder.

The mast consists of an untapered aluminum profile and has a pair of spreaders with upper and lower shrouds , the backstay is attached via a cockpit . An inland rig that was around 30 cm higher was also supplied for the Leisure 17 . The upper shrouds can remain attached for laying and setting the mast. A traveler rail can be installed between the cockpit and the locker to guide the mainsheet, and rails are mounted on the side decks to adjust the jib sheet haul points. Originally simple creak bollards and curry clips were used to tighten the foresails , the traps are placed on cleats on the mast.

Motorization

Most Leisure 17s use an outboard motor as the motor . The trunk speed can already be reached with 3.68  kW engine power .

cabin

The cabin of the Leisure 17 consists of only one single room, which is clad with an inner shell from the forepeak to the companionway. The quality of the finishing can vary depending on the place and date of manufacture. The benches in the salon can be used as bunks . In addition, there are two dog bunks under the bench seats in the cockpit . The boat was built and sold as a family boat for four people, but in practice the Leisure 17 only offers sleeping and living space for a maximum of two people.

A swiveling table can be mounted on the mast support. A pull-out cooker can be installed under the companionway; there is a recess in the locker to accommodate a gas bottle. However, this storage is no longer considered safe, as any gas that might escape cannot flow out of the boat. There are storage spaces under the benches in the salon, behind the back cushions there are so-called "swallow nests" as storage compartments.

In the foredeck, a chemical or dry toilet can be installed under a cover, which does not have a drain to the outside; However, the use of this location is a challenge for taller people due to the low ceiling height and the mast support in front of it.

The original deck layout has plexiglass windows ("Perspex"), which are inserted with rubber frames and piping strips. The SL version got glued windows. Some boats are equipped with a wooden grating as a floor covering, but the inner shell also includes the floor area. A bilge in the classic sense does not exist.

Interesting

The Leisure 17 is surprisingly seaworthy despite its small size. This was proven by John Adam, who in 1967 crossed the Atlantic with a Leisure 17 on his journey from England to Cuba within 32 days.

A special feature of the Leisure 17 in the keel keel version is the mostly used, noticeably small trailer on which the boat stands backwards, stern to stern with the towing vehicle on the two keels and the keel .
