The lake consists of two interconnected lakes. They are located in the Livigno Alps on a small high plateau called S-chüella , enclosed by the mountains Piz Albris ( 3136  m ), Piz Languard ( 3263  m ), Piz Pischa ( 3136  m ) and Piz dal Fain ( 2907  m ) as well as by the passes Fuorcla Pischa ( 2835  m ) in the west, Fuorcla Prüna ( 2835  m ) in the north and Fuorcla Tschüffer ( 2832  m ) in the east.

The water flows towards the south and immediately after the lake falls steeply over Pascul da la Pischa into Val Pischa . The water then flows into the Ova da la Val da Fain , which , coming from La Stretta , drains the Val da Fain and then as Ova da Bernina through the Val Bernina to Samedan , where it flows into the Inn .
