Jost Lemmerich (born June 7, 1929 in Berlin ; † March 21, 2018 there ) was a German physicist and historian of science who mainly organized numerous exhibitions on the history of science in physics in the 20th century.

Life

At the end of the war, the 15-year-old was drafted into the Volkssturm and wounded. His older brother had already died in the war, and then his father too. He was able to finish school with the Abitur in the post-war period. His father had been at Siemens, so Jost Lemmerich began working there too, in a chemistry laboratory. Made possible by the company, he studied physics at the Technical University of Berlin between 1956 and 1962 . After working again at Siemens, in 1970 he moved to the German and then to the European Patent Office in Berlin. There, and later more intensively after his retirement, he began to deal with the history of physics and its public presentation. He organized over 20 exhibitions, including at the Berlin State Library and the Deutsches Museum in Munich. It all started in 1977 with the exhibition on "The Physics of the Twenties" when the "Trends of the Twenties" were shown in Berlin. Later he became a Fellow of Churchill College of Cambridge University , where he at Churchill Archives Center Lise Meitner worked discount. From this estate he edited her correspondence with Max von Laue and Elisabeth Schiemann .

As an author, Lemmerich wrote several biographies in addition to catalogs for his exhibitions and individual articles on scientific history.
